“And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10
Do you believe the Lord wants to direct your steps day by day? Does He want you to be so tuned into Him that He can lead you turn by turn?
As we make our way through the book of 1 Samuel, this past week we looked at 1 Samuel 3 where God calls Samuel and begins to speak to him as a prophet. As we saw it all begins with God… and continues with Samuel’s posture in terms of how he responded to God’s voice towards him. Some people, when it comes to God speaking to them can actually attempt to force God’s hand. This story illustrates the point:
“Walter Knight told of an old Scottish woman who went from home to home across the countryside selling thread, buttons, and shoestrings. When she came to an unmarked crossroad, she would toss a stick into the air and go in the direction the stick pointed when it landed. One day, however, she was seen tossing the stick up several times. “Why do you toss the stick more than once?” someone asked. “Because,” replied the woman, “it keeps pointing to the left, and I want to take the road on the right.” She then dutifully kept throwing the stick into the air until it pointed the way she wanted to go!”
Samuel, the one whose name means “heard of God” postured himself before the Lord as a servant. He was not trying to get God to do things his way, but he was humble and receptive to God’s ways and will for his life.
What about you? Have you bent the knee of your will to the Lord? Is He your Savior and your Lord?
The real question about “Hearing God’s Voice” is not whether or not He Is Speaking… the question is are you listening?
May God make you a true hearer of His Voice. May He lead you step by step, turn by turn, day by day… In Jesus name.
By His Spirit,
Pastor Bill
